After-School Program
01 · Education & child development

After-School Program in Remote Areas of Kenya

There are many issues that led Nesting for Hope International to initiate an after-school program in remote communities.

View project details
Why the program is needed
  • Overcrowded schools in Kenya with high teacher-to-student ratios, around 1:80.
  • Lack of individualized attention, leading to children falling behind and losing interest in school.
  • Limited extra-curricular activities, causing non-academic students to become disengaged.
  • Children may turn to streets or child labor due to lack of support.
Objectives
  • Improve academic performance and educational outcomes.
  • Enhance life skills and character development.
  • Foster environmental awareness and responsibility.
  • Provide a safe and supportive environment for children.
  • Connect children with healthcare support.
Program components
  • Academic support and tutoring.
  • Life skills training: conflict resolution, self-esteem and goal setting.
  • Environmental conservation: tree planting, waste management and community clean-ups.
  • Creative expression: arts, crafts, music and drama.
  • Sports and physical activity.
Expected impact
  • Improved academic performance and educational attainment.
  • Increased self-esteem and confidence.
  • Enhanced environmental awareness and responsibility.
  • Reduced vulnerability to poverty, exploitation and harm.
  • Children empowered to become positive change agents in their communities.
  • Responsible, accountable citizens of the village and globe.
Participation

The original program included a parent/guardian application process covering guardian contacts, child information, education level, schools attended, medical information and consent for participation and documentation. The custom site can preserve the program information here while the application workflow is developed separately.

Nesting for Hope Health Services
02 · Healthcare

Nesting for Hope Health Services

Nesting for Hope International offers children complimentary counseling and minor treatment services through the Nesting for Hope Health Services clinic, located within the after-school program center.

View project details
Community model

To support sustainability, the wider community can also access the health center's services for a minimal fee. This creates a reliable source of affordable healthcare while supporting the well-being of children, families and the broader community.

Health challenge

Children in the community face serious respiratory health challenges due to poor housing, exposure to smoke and dust, and malnutrition from poverty. These conditions increase infection risk and can hinder development.

Approach

Improving housing, access to nutrition and hygiene education through targeted interventions can help reduce these health issues and promote overall community well-being. The clinic also creates a practical link between healthcare, child development and community support.

Menstrual Health Campaign
04 · Girl empowerment

Menstrual Health Campaign

In May–June 2025, Nesting for Hope successfully implemented a menstrual health awareness campaign across the Kerio Valley region of Keiyo South, Kenya.

View project details
About the campaign

The initiative aimed to address menstrual stigma, support menstrual dignity and improve health outcomes among adolescent girls and women in underserved communities.

Primary goals
  • Educate girls and women on menstrual hygiene management (MHM).
  • Distribute reusable menstrual pads to promote sustainable health practices.
  • Engage the community in open discussions to reduce menstrual stigma.
  • Reach schools and rural communities with limited access to menstrual products.
Implementation & partnerships

The campaign was made possible through reusable menstrual pad donations from FAME (USA). Nesting for Hope also worked with community volunteers, while Podtale Podcast provided volunteers who helped teach children and distribute pads.

School outreach covered Muskut Primary School, Kapsoo Primary School and Menone Primary School, with educational sessions, pad distribution to upper-primary girls, female teachers and female support staff, and empowerment talks led by female health workers and volunteers.

Medical camp distribution

The campaign also extended into the Nesting for Hope Medical Camp, distributing pads to women of reproductive age attending for treatment or health services and teenage girls who were not in school because of menstruation-related challenges.

Over 400 reusable menstrual pad kits were distributed across the schools and medical camp.

Impact & feedback

Girls and women expressed relief, confidence and gratitude for the reusable pads and educational support. Teachers and caregivers also commended the menstrual education approach for its positive effect on school attendance and engagement.

“Now I don’t have to miss school or feel embarrassed. The lessons helped me a lot, and I feel more confident.” — Student, Kapsoo Primary School

Challenges & lessons learned
  • Cultural sensitivity: Some initial resistance was encountered because of cultural taboos around discussing menstruation openly. Community involvement eased this barrier.
  • Transport and accessibility: Poor road infrastructure limited access to some areas, emphasizing the need for stronger local partnerships and planning.
Next steps
  • Establish recurring menstrual health workshops in schools and community centers.
  • Expand partnerships for reusable pads and train women in Kenya to make the pads locally rather than depending on foreign donations.
  • Include menstrual health sessions in future medical outreach events.
